Background of the study
Digital communication has dramatically reshaped linguistic practices, particularly in the domain of syntax. In Nigeria, Twitter threads have emerged as microcosms of language innovation, where users engage in extended, interconnected dialogues that challenge traditional syntactic norms. These thread structures encourage the use of unconventional punctuation, abbreviated sentence forms, and creative clause linkage, all of which contribute to a dynamic evolution in syntax (Ibrahim, 2023). The rapid pace and interactive nature of Twitter promote real‑time language adaptation, leading to variations that reflect both local cultural influences and global digital trends. As users participate in discussions ranging from politics to entertainment, they often blend standard grammar with emergent forms that better suit the online environment. This phenomenon not only illustrates the malleability of language in digital contexts but also highlights the transformative impact of technology on everyday communication. By focusing on Twitter thread structures, this study aims to investigate how digital affordances facilitate syntactic experimentation and adaptation among Nigerian users. The research explores the interplay between brevity, immediacy, and creative expression in shaping new syntactic patterns, offering insights into the broader implications for language change in a digital age (Okafor, 2024). The study also examines how these changes influence readers’ interpretation and the overall coherence of online discourse.
Statement of the problem
Despite the prominence of Twitter threads in Nigerian digital communication, there is limited empirical research on how these platforms specifically alter syntactic structures. Existing studies tend to generalize digital language without addressing the unique syntactic innovations generated by thread interactions (Chukwu, 2023). This research gap obscures our understanding of the mechanisms by which digital tools drive syntax variation and the potential implications for traditional grammatical norms. Without targeted analysis, educators and policymakers are left without a clear framework for addressing the evolving language patterns in online discourse (Ibrahim, 2023).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in‑depth exploration of syntax variation driven by digital communication. By focusing on Twitter threads, the research informs linguists, educators, and digital media analysts on emerging language trends, contributing to theoretical models of digital linguistics and guiding language policy in a rapidly changing digital era (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to Twitter thread structures among Nigerian users; it excludes other digital platforms and offline communication practices.
